Future Contract Grow-Outs at Scholls Valley Native Nursery

For almost 20 years, Scholls Valley Native Nursery has been growing native plants adapted to our region, and our range of offerings is among the most diverse in the industry. If you need 15,000 bare-root swamp rose, 1,000 1-gallon tall Oregon grape or 10,000 camas bulbs, we can help you out. There are also dozens of species that can add greatly to the diversity of a restoration site but that we do not regularly grow in large numbers. Most of the species we will be offering as contract grow-outs are still available this winter. However, in future years, these species are likely to only be available as contract grow-outs. With enough advance notice, we would be happy to grow these less-common plants for your projects. For bare-root herbaceous species, we have a 1,000-plant minimum, and for bare-root trees and shrubs, the minimum is 3,000 or 5,000, depending on the species.

Because we hand collect the seeds for the majority of the plants we grow (and purchase what we don’t collect ourselves), we will need to have a grow-out contract in place a year or more in advance in order to provide sufficient time to get seeds planted. Please take a look at the list of species we can grow out on contract, and let us know if you would like us to get growing for your future projects.

Outgrowing Plastics

Scholls Valley Native Nursery is very excited and proud to announce our new initiative: “Outgrowing Plastics.” Over the last several years we have reduced our use of plastics during propagation and distribution of our plant materials, with a particular focus on single-use and limited-use plastics. While we currently still have a wide range of species in 1-gallon containers, as a part of this initiative, we now offer every species that we grow as a bare-root product, and will be phasing out distribution of plastic containers and plug trays in the next few years.

At this time, we continue to have a wide range of trees, shrubs and sword ferns in 1-gallon containers, as well as a very limited number of plug trays. Additionally, in our move toward becoming a more sustainable native-plant nursery, our bare-root inventory now includes the many species that we have traditionally grown in plug trays and pots, as well as a variety of new species. This wide range of bare-root plants makes the upcoming year’s bare-root inventory the largest and most diverse we have ever offered.

While we hope to eventually eliminate plastics altogether, we understand that for some applications our clients may wish to continue using plugs and containerized material. We are hard at work researching and testing non-plastic options for these applications, and are happy to discuss contract container grow-outs.

We look forward to working with each and every one of you in our mission to Outgrow Plastics for good. Thank you for your continued support as we strive to ensure that not only our products, but also the growing practices that produce them, have a positive impact on the world.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Scholls Valley continues to place the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, customers, and community at the forefront of our business. We remain open, providing our customers with the high-quality plants you expect, and with many additional safeguards against the spread of the coronovirus (COVID-19) in place. Please contact us to arrange a time for picking up your plant order so we may ensure that there is only one customer on-site at a time, and to receive pick-up instructions. The office and employee center are closed to customers at all times, to ensure the safety of our employees. Together, we can stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Thank you for your consideration and patronage. All of us at Scholls Valley hope that you and your families stay safe and healthy.

At Scholls Valley Native Nursery, we are dedicated to providing high-quality, locally-adapted native plants for outplanting to support and restore biodiversity within the Willamette Valley’s thousands of acres of wetlands, forests, backyard and wildlife habitats, and riparian areas.
