About Scholls Valley
When the good people at Oregon Bee Atlas asked in 2019 to survey for bees at our farm, we were happy to oblige. With each of several subsequent visits, OBA’s bee sleuths have commented on the number and diversity of bees (and wasps, pollinating flies, beetles and birds) they see here. This is just one example of the explosions of biodiversity that have occurred since Sara and George established Scholls Valley at its current location, nestled in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range.
Once sterile monoculture fields of corn and grass seed, our farm now hosts growing populations of swallows, rare songbirds, rubber boas, western pond turtles, wood ducks, eagles, swallowtail butterflies and many many other species of wildlife. Our wetland reserve supports dozens of beaver, which have constructed several beaver dams, one of them nearly 1000 feet long and up to eight feet high, making it the largest beaver dam in western Oregon, right here on our farm. Our headlands and production fields are full of flowering plants that support pollinators and bird life throughout the growing season. We are Salmon Safe, and in 2025 are phasing out all plastics and inorganic pesticides as we transition to becoming the largest organic native bare-root nursery in North America.
Good work has to start at home. In 2003, nursery experts and advisers cautioned us that bare-root production isn’t possible without methyl bromide and other powerful fungicides and herbicides. We have proved them all wrong. In 2003, our founder Sara Kral committed us to restoring this farm as we provide the raw materials for restoring natural habitats in Western Washington and Oregon. And that is exactly what we have continued to do for over 20 years.
With gratitude,
Sara, George and the Scholls Valley Team
Why Native
We grow native plants specifically suited to western Oregon and Washington’s unique climate and ecosystems. These plants thrive with less water, fertilizer, and maintenance because they are naturally adapted to local conditions.
Native plants play a vital role in supporting the region’s wildlife, providing food and habitat for pollinators, birds, and other species essential to biodiversity. By choosing native plants, you’re not only enhancing your landscape but also contributing to the health and sustainability of our home.
Community Partners
We believe that volunteerism is vitally important to community health. We donate plants, volunteer time and/or provide financial support to the following organizations:
FOREST GROVE LITTLE LEAGUE GIRLS’ SOFTBALL
PORTLAND THORNS EARTH DAY CELEBRATION
WESTERN INVASIVE PLANT ALLIANCE
