Notes from the Farm 17 February 2026 – WOODLAND WILDFLOWERS

Nothing says springtime in the Northwest better than our beautiful woodland flora, and now is the perfect time to plant woodland rootstocks, like this gorgeous Dicentra formosa, the Pacific bleeding heart, growing here at the farm in our experimental woodland with Claytonia sibirica, our native candyflower:

DICFOR

Wendy Kral, our Hort Manager, has perfected the art of growing Dicentra as a bare-root propagule. These starts are really robust and each one will jump out of the ground this spring to produce a profusion of flowers and foliage. Take a look at these juicy crowns and rhizomes:

We also have about 500 beautiful Asarum caudatum – our local wild ginger:

And to round out your shade plantings, we also have a nice selection of the following bare-root plants:

Heracleum maximum – cow parsnip (4300 remaining)

Scrohularia californica – California figwort (600 remaining)

Thalictrum polycarpum – field meadowrue (1500 remaining); and

Polystichum munitum – western sword fern (1000 remaining)

All of these plants (except the sword fern) support a diversity of pollinators that are integral to forest ecosystems. The California figwort, one of our two native Scrophularia species, is among the best bumblebee attractors that I have ever encountered. And that’s saying something.

We have all of our remaining woodland (and prairie) wildflowers on sale right now. See the list below. All prices listed are 30-50% off our already low regular wholesale pricing. Just call or email us and mention this blog and we’ll set you up to make your woodlands, gardens, lawns (prairies) and other habitats more welcoming to bees and birds. Then let’s get some woodland plantings done while the weather is still cool and wet. Next blog will cover prairie perennials. Happy spring!

-George

PS..$300 minimum and increments of 50 plants still apply!
